Mortal Shell 2 NPC Questlines — Complete Guide

Sixteen-plus NPC questlines mapped out — every quest giver, merchant, reward, and the missables that lock you out.

Overview

Mortal Shell 2 is dense with time-gated NPC interactions: most side quests vanish if you miss the right conversation window, so talk to everyone every time. This page lists the confirmed questline entries (16+ quest givers and interactions), key rewards, and the missables worth planning around, cross-checked against post-launch coverage (Game8, Fextralife, RPS, GameRant).

Quest NPCs

  • Gorf — a coughing, lonely frog in northern Widow's Overlook near the first beacon, wants a companion; each delivery earns a Marsh Pearl (2,000 Coins), the best early money loop. Deliver Weltcap ×2 then Common Moonshine ×2 over four to five rounds; bodies appear nearby to loot for Gloom, and Gorf eventually falls ill and hands you the Poisoned Dagger, which points to the mushroom village. Never attack Gorf — it aborts the line. His quest interlocks with Hilga's, so start her line first.
  • Hilga and Grom — a fenced yard east of the Mushroom Village Beacon: Hilga, a frog woman, is stewing Grom in her pot, and the cauldron behind her fully restores you. Return visits play out Grom's transformation, a dive into the pot, Harwald's fate, Grom locked away, and Harwald's grave; once Gorf's line gives you the Poisoned Dagger, hand it to Hilga, read her farewell letter, deliver Common Moonshine to her at Gorf's spot, and watch the reunion ending. Rewards a Marsh Pearl.
  • Grisha Pup — a caged Grisha near the first Mushroom Village beacon. Buy the Cage Key (250 Coins) from the Grisha Hunter merchant, free it, and get the Tooth of Nochte (sellable to Merrick). Release it for an extra Sheephead Totem — but the hunter is wiped out and his shop vanishes after a beacon rest, so buy out the stock first, especially Grisha Remnant. Keep it caged and the hunter stays. (Video coverage confirms the Grisha pup and its mother are responsible for the hunter's death — see YouTube transcript archive.)
  • Sester Genessa — the Marrow Keep training partner; her Shell body sits near the Mammon Abbey Entrance Beacon, and returning it unlocks the Sester trophy.

Merchant & Support NPCs

  • Ruk — the bird-like guide who calls you "Harbinger" in the Forlorn Village prologue; reaching Marrow Keep's outskirts grants Ruk's Map.
  • Franz — the Tarforge operator. Restore the machine with parts to unlock features: Muradean Actuator (Overgrown Temple, prologue) enables weapon upgrades; Etching Needles (Glutted Mire, before Magdalena) enables Tarstone forging; Obsidian Lathe and Foundry Stone are on the roster, but their spots are unverified.
  • Merrick — marks loot areas on your map, stocks more wares as you progress, and sells the Acolyte's and Unwieldy Tarstones. Dog is his pettable companion (affiliation unconfirmed); Milos tends the Ovum; Thestus toggles Night Mode when summoned with the Gloombound Flame at the Marrow Keep brazier.

Key Questlines

  • Vlas — an ambushed merchant south of the Outskirts of Mammon on the Road of Absolution, traveling with his cat Mutton. Find Mutton in the small cage under the wooden luggage cart for a Coin of Mammon; after a beacon rest Vlas says he is leaving, and at Gate of Mammon's Lonesome Spire he is caged behind the merchant Brigand. Give him the Unremarkable Key (location disputed — verify in game), buy out Brigand's stock before he vanishes, read Vlas's letter, then find Vlas at Marrow Keep for a second Coin of Mammon (two total).
  • Egon — deep inside Castigator's Keep, accepts donations in 1,000-Gloom increments up to a 20,000 total, cumulative across visits. Fill it and he passes away, refunding 40,000 Gloom (net +20,000) and triggering the Feed Me trophy.

Missables & Warnings

  • Marigold (prologue, Forlorn Village) gives the Flower Crown — cosmetic, but permanently lost if you skip the prologue, with no NG+ recatch.
  • Gorf ↔ Hilga interlock: pushing Gorf's quest too far before starting Hilga's skips her early interactions. Do the yard scenes first.
  • Slayer Seal: carrying or using it locks achievements and trophies — leave it unequipped for a 100% run.
  • Baghead (Gloomshade Grove cliff edge) unlocks a special ending — single-source, pending.

Mushroom Village villagers — Suspicious, Young, Lonely and Despondent — offer small conversations with no confirmed rewards. Their window behaviour is not yet documented by any published guide, so treat them as low-stakes flavour and talk to them when you pass through the village.

Vratko is an acolyte of Undermethor kneeling in Marrow Keep, in the room leading to the Tarforge Chamber from the Ova Nursery. He offers to wash your feet — not the other way around — with a unique line of dialogue for each Shell you are holding. There are no rewards and no achievement: after about four washes his dialogue simply loops. He is flavour-only and carries no missable consequences.

Mutton is the cat travelling with Vlas (see Key Questlines). In the opening step, the small empty cage under the wooden baggage cart across from Vlas is only a clue that he is missing — the cat is not still in it. After you rescue Vlas from his cage at Lonesome Spire using the Unremarkable Key, both return to Marrow Keep, where Mutton becomes a permanent pet you can interact with. There is no separate Mutton reward; the two Coins of Mammon come from Vlas.

Foul Passenger — the parasitic entity that dwells within UnderMether's helms. After defeating Zmey the Unbidden, UnderMether confirms the "foul passenger" has been removed — a key lore reveal from the final boss encounter. This is not a conventional questline but an essential piece of the game's overarching narrative, tying the final boss fight to the world's corruption arc.
