Overview
Mortal Shell 2 puts you in control of the Harbinger, a nameless wanderer who can inhabit the bodies of the fallen — the Shells. Mortal Shell 2 (full release August 20, 2026) features eight playable Shells, plus Harros, who appears only in the prologue and never joins the permanent roster. Each Shell is more than a skin swap: it carries its own health pool, active ability, passives and skill tree, and it shapes how you build the character around it.
This page is the Shell overview. Below you'll find the full list of all 8 Shells with a one-line read on each fighter's role, how the Shell system works, and where to unlock every permanent Shell.
Note: tier references below are editorial — outlets rank the same Shells differently (ThePhraseMaker puts Tiel, Smert and Genessa at S; PixelNitro and others favor Sariel). Treat those as starting points and match the Shell to your own playstyle.
All 8 Shells at a Glance
Community sources (GameRant, Rock Paper Shotgun, DualShockers, Joytify and the official site's Pious Edition, which bundles Obsidian looks for all eight playable Shells) agree on the count: eight permanent Shells. Here they are, with the role each one plays.
| Shell | Role | In a sentence |
|---|---|---|
| Tiel, the Acolyte | Agile assassin | Invisibility from Lingering Shadow and perfect-dodge Shadow Dash make Tiel the fastest, most beginner-friendly Shell in the game. |
| Proxima, the Broodseeker | All-rounder | Biosampler grapple applies lightning stacks while Grafted Armor gives a chance to halve incoming damage. |
| Eredrim, the Venerable | Break specialist | Shoulder Bash and the Executioner passive keep enemies broken and low-health enemies one-shot. |
| Gragu, the Insatiable | Sustain bruiser | Staggering Blow heavy punches pair with Revered Heart, a healing flask that refills on kills. |
| Smert, the Apostate | High-risk burst | Miracle freezes time while bare-handed chaos stacks pile up and detonate for huge single-target damage. |
| Lazlo, the Justicar | Fire tank | A heat meter fuels burn shockwaves and an armor buff; overheat detonates burn stacks but disables the armor. |
| Sariel, the Endless | Thorns tank | Exodus of Thorns applies Curse stacks to enemies while converting damage taken into recoverable gray health. |
| Genessa, the Wayward | Summoner | Faithful Doubles summon clones that take aggro and layer debuffs; Duality keeps the kit active after the health bar empties. |
Note on Sariel's title: post-launch coverage consistently uses "the Endless" — Fextralife's wiki page, Game8's guide, and multiple tier lists all carry "Sariel, the Endless." An early preview used "the Infinite," but the settled title is the Endless.
How Shells Work
A Shell is an extra protection layer wrapped around your real body, the Harbinger. While you wear one, its health pool absorbs damage; when it breaks, you're forced back into the fragile Harbinger form. Land melee hits to reattach to the Shell and keep fighting.
Shells also carry permanent progression. You spend a resource called Glimpses to climb each Shell's skill tree, unlocking new abilities, passives and synergy upgrades. That investment is permanent, and Glimpses are limited on a first playthrough — community guides consistently recommend committing to two or three Shells rather than spreading resources thin.
Two things to keep in mind as you read tier content elsewhere:
- Nine main weapons and eight sidearms round out the loadout, with Resolve built up through melee feeding sidearm usage (the nine-weapon count comes from the launch trophy list, which has one trophy per main weapon — see the weapons guide).
- Tier lists vary between outlets: ThePhraseMaker ranks Tiel, Smert and Genessa at S, while InGameNews slots Sariel and Gragu lower. Those differences are editorial opinion, not fact. Treat them as a starting point and match the Shell to your own playstyle.
Where to Unlock Every Shell
The Shells fall into two clusters. Five sit in the early area, Fainweald; the remaining three appear in the mid-to-late Mammon region.
Fainweald (early):
- Tiel — near Mushroom Village, in the shallow grave southeast of the Widow's Overlook beacon.
- Proxima — inside the Shattered Beacon northeast of the Blackridge Pass beacon.
- Eredrim — the Warden arena at the Citadel of Penance; an alternate route drops you in via a mysterious bag at the Overrun Quarry east of Fainweald.
- Gragu — at the One-Legged Wolf Tavern, after delivering the Heart of Vatra.
- Smert — at the ritual grounds west of the Nochte outskirts; the ritual demands two blood offerings (three blood pools in practice).
Mammon (mid-to-late):
- Lazlo — in the Crypts of Mammon after defeating Vellen, High Lord of Mammon.
- Sariel — a multi-phase fight. Engage Sariel on the ground near The Silent Steps beacon, then pursue the fight into the Chamber of Becoming. Destroy the four stones in the arena to stop the revival, then win the fight to claim the Shell and its weapon, the Clockwork Scythe.
- Genessa — a secret unlock in Marrow Keep. Defeat Sister Secundus to obtain the Sester's Censer, then return it to Genessa to unlock her.
Every Shell also grants a trophy or achievement, and collecting the full set earns a separate achievement for the collection.
