Gragu the Insatiable

A living tavern regular who joins your roster only after you fetch a god's heart — here's how to unlock Gragu and manage his kill-to-heal economy.

Overview

Gragu the Insatiable is the only Shell in Mortal Shell 2 that asks you to earn it over dinner — a living NPC who won't join the roster until you retrieve a god's heart and watch him eat it. Beyond the memorable unlock, he's the game's sustain bruiser: charged punches for single-target burst and a healing item that refills every time you kill. The Phrasemaker and GameRant both rank him B-tier, with GameRant's deep-dive explaining why.

The defining mechanic is Revered Heart, which replaces your Mether's Pulse flasks: no standard flask, fewer base uses (roughly 3), a heal under a third of a flask per charge, and heal-capacity upgrades — Revered Glands, Synaptic Vessels — simply don't apply to him. The upside: killing enemies refills the Heart. GameRant's verdict captures the identity: during exploration "every enemy is a walking health flask," and Gragu is the only Shell who can clear a map without ever touching a beacon. His flip side is just as sharp — boss fights are a fatal weakness, since you can't farm kills mid-boss. That trade-off is the whole B-tier case.

Abilities — Staggering Blow & Revered Heart

Gragu's kit is two halves, confirmed by Fextralife, DualShockers, The Phrasemaker and GameRant:

  • Staggering Blow (active) — a charged heavy punch built for single-target burst and break damage. His skill tree turns it into a weapon of its own: damage multipliers, status effects, and eventually a heart-ripping instant kill.
  • Revered Heart (passive sustain) — the kill-refill heal economy described above. It isn't a button you press for big numbers; it's a resource cycle that rewards constant aggression.

The two halves feed each other: Staggering Blow kills things, kills refill the Heart, and the Heart's buffs make the next punch hit harder.

Skill Tree Highlights

Fextralife carries the only complete tree. Values below are post-release guide numbers, pending verification. One naming warning: Gragu's Tier 1 Escalation shares Tiel's name but does something different (his boosts Staggering Blow, hers boosts Shadow Strike) — keep the Shell prefix in mind.

TierSkillWhat it does (post-release values, pending verification)
Tier 1EscalationStaggering Blow damage up to 170%.
Tier 1BloodthirstKills refund extra Revered Heart charges (up to +80%).
Tier 2HarvestRevered Heart heals more and holds more charges (uses scale to 4, then 8).
Tier 2ManiacBonus melee damage against enemies you haven't killed yet (up to 140%) — a first-contact nuke.
Tier 3AngerStaggering Blow adds Weak, Fragile, and flat break damage.
Tier 3BloodlustAfter using Revered Heart: next melee hits for 200%, or clears all debuffs, or grants Warp stacks.
Tier 3DevourerWhile the Heart is full, kills refund Gloom, Resolve, and 20 health.
Tier 4HeartlessStaggering Blow rips the heart out of small/medium humanoids: instant kill, heal, and a 150-damage blood splash.
Tier 4HungerWith an empty Heart, critical chance climbs up to +60% — desperation mode.
Tier 4FortifyResting at a beacon refunds 1–3 Heart charges, patching his boss-fight weakness a little.

How to Get Gragu

His quest needs travel you can't do from the start. The region around the One-Legged Wolf Tavern is locked behind corruption, and GameSpot and Fextralife agree you need Mether's Breath — earned by collecting roughly five extra Ova and injecting them at Marrow Keep — to cleanse your way in. The full verified flow (AltChar is the most detailed, AllThingsHow corroborates):

  1. Reach the One-Legged Wolf Tavern. Gragu sits there ignoring everyone. AltChar warns: keep mashing the dialogue button — he won't speak until you've pressed it repeatedly.
  2. He asks for the Heart of Vatra. It's at the Temple of Vatra, the map's far east across a bridge. Head east from the One Legged Wolf beacon through the Traverse Gate and up the temple stairs. (The temple stays hidden in the fog of war even with every map fragment.)
  3. On the left, perform three sacrifices to light the lamps and open a chest holding the Berserker's Stone. The heart itself is in the hands of the statue at the temple's peak.
  4. Grabbing the heart wakes the petrified statues and seals the door. Two versions of the escape exist — AltChar says take the "secret" route on the right; DualShockers says all enemies break from stone and it's a fight. Either way, a side route (broken wall on the left, jump down) loops you back without combat.
  5. Return to Gragu and choose the delivery prompt. He eats the heart, dies on the spot, the "Heartless" bronze trophy pops, and you occupy his corpse.

Recommended Build

Game8's Best Builds hub (T2, single source) pairs Gragu with Veteran's Battle Axe + Triarch Repeater and the Vatra's Seal. Core skills: Escalation, Attunement, Maniac, Anger, Bloodlust, Hunger, Fortify, with Headman's, Auspicious, Marksman's and Berserker's as support tarstones. The idea: Revered Heart's buffs and Staggering Blow land high single-target bursts. Veteran's Battle Axe sits in the King's Crypt dungeon — northwest of the Shattered Beacon, near Proxima's unlock point — and is a middling but versatile weapon, exactly what a B-tier bruiser wants.

Final Thoughts

Gragu's unlock trophy is Heartless, and the "eat the heart and drop dead" moment is widely cited as one of the most memorable unlock events in the game (community sentiment, T2). He's the right Shell for exploration-heavy playthroughs where you never want to backtrack to a beacon — and the wrong one for people who die to bosses. If you can live with his trade-offs, Mortal Shell 2's hungriest fighter will keep you fed.
