Overview
Droeg the Conqueror is the final boss of the Conquered Temple, the snow-buried Corrupted Gate dungeon in the Mammon region, and he is one of the most visually absurd fights in Mortal Shell 2. He is a frost troll with a skull-full head wielding a gargantuan bone as a club — the launch coverage describes his weapon as "just a big bone." But behind the comedy is a genuinely dangerous encounter: Droeg has a ranged phase-two barrage that the guides all agree kills more players than his club ever does. One writer put it bluntly: the fire-ice projectiles killed them more than the bone.
The fight is a two-phase challenge where phase two is the entire difficulty. Phase one is a straightforward heavyweight brawl; phase two, which triggers once you land an execution, turns the arena into a shooting gallery of tracking projectiles. As with several other Mammon bosses, the day one patch raised Droeg's damage, so the launched version hits harder than any pre-release footage suggests.
Location
Droeg guards the end of the Conquered Temple, an icy dungeon in the Mammon region that different outlets attach to different ground areas — the wiki places its southeast gate inside Sester's Refuge, while other guides name the surrounding zone the Valley of the Revered. Either way, the route is consistent: clear the temple, defeat Urrig the Executioner along the way, and reach the Ovate Chamber Beacon. From that beacon the path to Droeg's arena is short; you pass Ruk and drop through a Bone Gate portal to start the fight.
The area is heavy on frost damage, with a stretch of extreme cold where the air itself damages you on a timer. The region is stuffed with Martyr's Ash, a consumable that matters a lot for this fight (more on that below), and holds the Frostshard Stone if you push through the cold to the far end. Just do not go in low on healing.
Attacks
Droeg's move set is readable but punishing. The launch coverage across GameSpot, Game8, Rock Paper Shotgun, and GameTyrant lines up on the core tells.
| Attack | Tell | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Blazing Frostfire | Droeg looks staggered but red icons flare around him — flames erupt from behind his body | They home on your position and hit hard — dodge out of the spread |
| Triple overhead slam | Bone raised high, arms pulled back, three vertical smashes | Dodge sideways through the set — never punish mid-combo |
| Double sweep | Bone on shoulder, thick end down, two horizontal sweeps | Dodge backward past both arcs |
| Unblockable bone slam | Bone driven down with no block prompt | Cannot be blocked — roll through the impact |
| Rock Barrage | ~50% health: he kneels, clutches his head, and summons tracking fire-rocks overhead | Keep sprinting and dodging sideways until the barrage ends |
The most dangerous move in phase one is the Blazing Frostfire: when Droeg looks like he is stunned but the red icons are flaring, the flames are coming off his back rather than his weapon, and every projectile tracks your position. If you see the icons, stop attacking and get clear. In phase two, watch for him kneeling and clutching his head — that is the summon for the tracking rock barrage, the single deadliest moment of the whole fight.
Phases
Phase one is a straight heavyweight duel. Droeg swings his bone, occasionally throws out a triple overhead slam, and stomps. The advice from every guide is to stay close — counterintuitive for a boss with a giant club, but the reach of his horizontal swings makes mid-range the worst place to be. Wait for a full combo to finish, then step in for one or two hits. Parrying is possible and blocking works on the standard swings, but never block the unblockable slam.
Phase two begins after you trigger an execution. Droeg transitions into a ranged posture: he starts throwing flaming balls of ice — the projectile barrage — and both his club slams and the projectiles can leave you frozen in place. There is a small contradiction in the launch coverage here: one source says hits accumulate Burn (ongoing fire damage) while another says the ice balls cause Frozen (being locked in place), with the official move name Blazing Frostfire straddling both. The practical read, as of the launch coverage, is that the barrage hits you with an elemental status either way, so you want protection on both fronts. Pop a Martyr's Ash immediately when phase two starts — it is the consumable recommended across the sources for exactly this moment — and keep moving.
Strategy
The core lesson of this fight is that close is safe and distance is death. Up close you control the rhythm: bait the combos, punish the recovery, and avoid the projectiles entirely because they are not being fired at you. At range you are the target of everything, and the barrage has no reliable escape except relentless dodging.
When Droeg kneels to summon the tracking rocks, drop what you are doing and sprint around the arena, dodging sideways as each rock falls. If a projectile clips you, the status effect — Burn or Frozen depending on which guide you trust — will cost you a flask on top of the direct damage, so treat the barrage as a "no damage allowed" phase. The Burnt Effigy passive reduces Burn accumulation if you have it equipped, per a single-source tip from the launch coverage; it is still being confirmed, but the item is cheap to slot.
Summon Gragu before the fight to take aggro, but remember the launch coverage warning that Gragu does not survive permanently — he will fall in phase two, so plan the summon as a phase-one crutch, not a win condition. The Martyr's Ash from the zone is your real sustain tool for the second half.
Reward and Trophy
Droeg drops the Conqueror's Reward, a special Tarstone for the Black Needle that consumes 100 resolve to lunge forward in a rapid series of thrusts. The direct Gloom payout is reported as 38,753 in the single detailed source from the launch coverage, so the exact figure is still being confirmed.
The related achievement is It burnssssssssss, earned for defeating Droeg the Conqueror, and it appears across the trophy lists published at launch. On the patch front, the day one update increased Droeg's damage — he is explicitly listed among the buffed bosses in the launch patch notes — so bring extra healing and do not trust pre-patch footage for how many hits you can survive. The barrage was already the fight's killer before the patch; it is only meaner now.
