The Monolith — Boss Guide

A slow, deliberate fight against a walking fortress — learn the pulse beam timing and claim the Monolith Fragment.

Overview

The Monolith is the late-game boss of Mortal Shell 2 hidden inside the Obsidian Vault of the Unfound Path — a walking fortress with an enormous health pool and a fight built around patience rather than reaction. For most of the encounter the Monolith does not chase you; it simply exists, and you have to find the openings in its rhythm. The fight is a marathon: the boss has the highest health bar of the late-game stretch, and the only consistent way to win is to stay disciplined, chip away at its soft center, and learn the pulse-beam timing of phase two.

As with the rest of the endgame, the day one patch (preview notes shared with media before release) reworked The Monolith significantly: damage was raised across the board, the tracking laser was changed to be "fairer but more dangerous" — safe until it connects, then fully locked on — and the crushing sweep now deals double damage if you linger in the danger zone. Plan for the patched version, not the earliest walkthrough footage.

Location

The Monolith waits in the Obsidian Vault, a dungeon inside the Unfound Path — the endgame area opened after you gather 168 Ovum and drop through the floor passage under Marrow Keep. The reliable route starts from the Obsidian Vault Beacon; after leaving the vault itself, follow the main path downhill to the arena. (One guide also references a "Nameless Pass Beacon" for this fight, but the Obsidian Vault placement is the consistent one across every source, so treat the vault as the anchor point.)

You will face the other Unfound Path encounters nearby — Orrem at the Bridge of Procession and Malborn Offspring at Faithful's Shelter — so plan the route as one long stretch with the Obsidian Vault in the middle.

Attacks

The Monolith's move set is small, but every move is meant to punish impatience. In phase one the boss mostly relies on its weight: expect jump-and-squash attacks where it launches into the air and slams down on your position, plus slow, awkwardly animated swings that are hard to parry because the timing never looks the way it feels. Guides consistently recommend dodging rather than parrying this fight. When the core closes, watch for a faster side-roll attack that catches players who orbit too greedily.

Phase two begins once its health is roughly half gone. The Monolith gains its signature pulse beams: a beam activates, the boss rotates while firing, and you must time your dodge to slip past it. Around this point it also gains a heavy laser fired from the center of the arena — easier to avoid, but the beam itself is a fully locked-on tracking attack once it connects, so never treat the laser's first seconds as safe.

Strategy

The core mechanic of the fight is the Monolith's fleshy center. Wait for it to open, then attack — the boss is most vulnerable at the moment of the open/close transition, and that is when your damage window actually exists. When the core is closed, do not try to force damage with melee; that is when the faster side-roll attack comes out.

For phase two, the universal advice is to keep circling. Run around the arena to stay ahead of the pulse beams, and reserve your dodges for the sweep timing. The central laser is easier to avoid than it looks and, per the location checklist, the boss leaves a punishable opening once the laser collapses — so the second half is about staying alive through the beam, then bursting the center when the opening appears.

Because the Monolith is a wall of health, chip damage is your friend. The boss still takes damage while its core is closed, and one guide recommends leaning on your sidearm to keep pressure from range while you wait for openings — a solid approach if you find the open/close windows too risky. Note that this fight has no shell-summon option listed (unlike several other bosses), so bring your best self-sustaining setup: a well-upgraded weapon, full healing, and a build you trust to outlast a long fight.

Reward

Defeating The Monolith rewards you with a Monolith Fragment — a trade item worth 5,000 coins — plus roughly 65,511 Gloom, which makes this one of the most profitable fights in the late game. Two separate sources agree on the Fragment and the Gloom figure, so those rewards are on solid ground. A single-source report also ties the "Praise him!" achievement to beating this boss, which is still unverified but fits the encounter.

From here the Unfound Path narrows to its last tests: Malborn Offspring at Faithful's Shelter, then the final boss Zmey the Unbidden. Bank your Gloom, spend your Monolith Fragment, and get ready — the hardest parts of Mortal Shell 2 are still ahead.
