Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods — Boss Guide

Mortal Shell 2's first true roadblock rides a flamethrower wheelchair — dodge everything, punish the openings, and claim Magdalena's Memento.

Overview

Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods is almost certainly the first major story boss most players fight in Mortal Shell 2. She sits at the end of the Glutted Mire, a Corrupted Gate dungeon in the Fainweald region, and the Ova you need to progress funnel you straight toward her arena. She is also one of the game's most memorable fights in the best possible way: Magdalena rides a flame-spouting motorised wheelchair and loves nothing more than slamming straight into you with it. Every major guide from the launch coverage agrees on the core read: win by dodging, not blocking, because almost every attack in her kit is unblockable.

The good news is that Magdalena's rhythm is generous. Her attacks have clear tells, her animations are slow enough to read, and each window of opportunity only asks for one or two light attacks. If you treat the encounter as a patience test instead of a damage race, the Lady of the Woods goes down without much trouble. Plan for the launched version: a beta build reworked her poise and stagger behaviour, and the day one patch rebalanced the global stance system, so older pre-release clips are not a reliable reference.

Location

Magdalena awaits at the end of the Glutted Mire, a Corrupted Gate dungeon whose entrance sits near the area different outlets call Mushroom Village or Sunken Village. The walk to her involves clearing the region, defeating the Wandering Shepherd, then pushing through a tunnel into Magdalena's Glade. The closest Beacon is the Sunken Village Beacon, and the arena is right there — the approach is short and clear of enemies apart from a few sheep.

Once she falls, a new Beacon (Magdalena's Glade Beacon) rises in the middle of the arena. Purify it to collect 26 Ova — the standard payout for a Corrupted Gate boss — then take the lift back to Marrow Keep, where you can digest the Ova with the Gloom Siphon for roughly 2,500 Gloom, plus a bonus 15 Ventrium if you cleared the Ovum Thief that wandered the area.

Attacks

Magdalena's move set is small and every move is telegraphed. The three signature attacks below have official names from the launch coverage and make up the entire loop of the fight.

AttackTellCounter
Cart RamShe revs her chair engine and charges your positionUnblockable — roll out of the line; punish her as she recovers
Fire SpinShe spins in place, spraying a ring of flame from behind the chairBack off and wait for the fire to die before re-engaging
Blown BabiesShe summons Tar Babies that explode near youKeep moving to dodge the blast radius, then resume damage

Beyond those three, watch her posture. If you hug her for too long she throws out a quick unblockable charge, so treat proximity as a privilege, not a right. The only reliable way to open her up is to bait a charge, dodge through it, and punish the recovery with one or two light hits — never more. Rinse and repeat until her stance breaks; a Riposte on Magdalena deals roughly half her health bar in a single execution.

Phases

Magdalena does not have a traditional second form, but her behaviour shifts twice as her health drops. At roughly 50% health she starts summoning small swamp enemies — sources describe them as Child of Gloom adds or demon babies, depending on the guide. They die in a single hit but swarm you if ignored, so clear them fast; area-of-effect swings make short work of the group while she stays exposed in the middle. At roughly 30% health she releases a cloud of flying insects — written as flies in some guides and bees in others — that surround her and lock you into an animation if you linger. The reliable response is to back away, bait her into repositioning, and only re-engage once the swarm disperses.

The thresholds themselves are well corroborated across multiple independent guides from the launch coverage, so you can plan your healing and consumables around the 50% and 30% marks.

Strategy

The universal advice from every source is to block rarely and dodge constantly. Magdalena's attacks are almost all unblockable, and the ones that are not are not worth the poise trade. The Tiel shell is the recommended pick here — his stamina-friendly dodging fits the hit-and-run rhythm perfectly. Equip a long-range weapon such as the Iconoclast or the Veteran's Axe so your one-or-two-hit windows actually reach her; the Axe & Dagger is also excellent, since its running attack and charged heavy land safely from range.

Bait her charge, dodge sideways, land a couple of hits, back off. If she Fire Spins, hold distance until the flame ring is gone. When she summons Tar Babies, sprint rather than dodge — the bombs catch players who try to i-frame them. Before the fight you can spend one Glimpse at her arena to permanently unlock Smert as a phantom helper. He is fragile and deals little damage, but he reliably draws aggro and gives you breathing room to heal or reposition; once unlocked, summoning him costs nothing, even if he dies mid-fight.

For the final 30%, the insect swarm is the main threat — do not stand next to her while it is active, because the lock animation it triggers is a death sentence. A single-source tip from the launch coverage also suggests hugging the arena wall so her charge smashes her into it, leaving her stuck and open; it is still being confirmed, but it costs nothing to try.

Reward and Trophy

Defeating Magdalena grants Magdalena's Memento, a special Tarstone for the Axe & Dagger that consumes 100 resolve to launch you skyward before unleashing a string of brutal attacks. She also drops the standard 26 Ova through her arena Beacon, as covered above.

The related achievement is Ultimate Karen, earned for defeating Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods — multiple trophy lists from the launch coverage agree on the name and the condition. As for the day one patch, Magdalena was not named in the patch notes, but the global changes apply directly to her fight: Riposte now triggers only on light attacks, boss poise resistance was standardised, and parry window timing was adjusted. If the build notes for beta 87133 hold, her stagger behaviour was also reworked, which is still being confirmed as of the launch coverage — so expect the fight to feel slightly different from any walkthrough filmed before release day.
